1. 19mm — the standard thickness for hardwood decking (merbau, jarrah, blackbutt, spotted gum, ironbark) at 450mm joist centres
2. 22mm — the standard thickness for treated pine and cypress pine decking at the same 450mm joist centres, since softer timbers need extra thickness to match a hardwood’s stiffness
3. Wider joist spacing or thicker boards — only appropriate with an engineer's or supplier's span table for your specific species and stress grade; don't assume standard spacing applies to non-standard board sizes.

Treated Pine Decking

Treated pine decking is a pressure-treated softwood that protects against rot, fungal decay, and termite attack. This pine is ACQ-treated (Alkaline Copper Quaternary), which gives lasting protection rather than a temporary coating.

Treated Pine machines easily with common woodworking tools and takes paints, stains and decking oils without special preparation. Because it is widely available in standard profiles, matching replacement boards for future repairs or deck extensions is generally straightforward.

Treatment grade determines where each piece can be used:

1. H3 — rated for outdoor, above-ground use. This is what your decking boards and framing are treated to.
2. H4 — rated for outdoor use in or near ground contact. Use this for posts and footings, not board-level decking.

Using H3 timber where H4 is needed means faster decay in exactly the spot most exposed to the weather – confirm the right grade for each part of your build before you order.

Merbau

This reddish-brown timber is costlier than treated pine and can naturally resist termites. Freshly milled merbau naturally contains tannins that can leach during the first few rain events. Allowing the boards to weather before applying the final finish helps reduce staining and improves coating performance, particularly around paving and pool surrounds.

Note: Durability class rates the natural resistance of the heartwood only – sapwood on any species must still be treated for outdoor use. Ratings reflect AS 5604 test averages under normal exposure and reasonable maintenance, not a guarantee for every site.

Depending on the species variant, Jarrah and Blackbutt are available in different durability classes – the figures above reflect the most commonly cited ratings but always confirm against your supplier’s certified species before making a structural decision.
